Douglas Talbot is an Australian artist whose portraiture practice is grounded in a lifelong relationship with art, music, and human experience. Raised in Western Sydney and now based on the Gold Coast, Douglas has spent years observing people closely, drawn to the emotional nuance that lives beneath the surface of everyday life.

After completing a Diploma of Fine Art, Douglas followed a path outside the traditional art world, embarking on a career in policing. This experience profoundly shaped his understanding of resilience, vulnerability, and identity, and continues to inform the emotional honesty within his work. His portraits are not literal representations, but intuitive responses to lived experience, memory, and mood.

Working primarily with acrylic, ink, oil stick, and textured mediums, Douglas creates layered, expressive portraits influenced by music and lyrical narrative. Sound plays a central role in his process, guiding rhythm, mark making, and emotional tone. His paintings reflect a fascination with how music shapes memory and identity, inviting viewers into moments that feel both deeply personal and universally recognisable.

Douglas’ emerging practice has gained national recognition, with finalist selections in the The Doyles Art Prize and the Dean Cogle Art Prize. Through his work, he continues to explore the space where portraiture, sound, and storytelling intersect, creating pieces that encourage reflection, connection, and emotional resonance.
